Went to Walmart with all three of my kids. Why do I torture myself every single month like this? They weren't particularly bad this time, but whenever we approach the checkout stand I see it, and I start to sweat. I visualize an ancient Mayan Gauntlet Run and take a deep breathe. Here we go... Noah is climbing out of the basket because I ALWAYS manage to get the cart with a faulty buckle, Niko is fingering all the candy and trying to sneak it up on to the conveyor belt, Genevieve keeps wondering towards the double doors. Me, loading the conveyor belt, "Genevieve come here right now! Niko put that candy down and don't touch anything, Noah sit down!" Noah screaming, I think everyone in the store has stopped shopping to look at the display that is my family on check out stand three. "Niko don't do that!" Too late, knocks his head into the metal bar on the plastic bag caddy. Crying, loudly. Genevieve wandering around the corner, Noah now standing up in the cart, me digging through my amazon jungle of purse looking for my cash. I picture the check out lady reach out to strangle me, I almost welcome the embrace. Hah, found it! Pass it off, load the groceries, Noah now screaming, Genevieve and Niko brawling, sweat dripping down my brow creating a puddle at my feet. Make it to the double doors, I can see the parking lot, relief starting to sweep over me, but no, fate isn't so kind. Security alarm sets off, bouncer at the door drags me back in, while Genevieve continues to take off out the doors. "Genevieve, get back here!"
Mean Walmart lady, "let me just dig through here and see what is going off." Both kids trying to knock over the spinning money can for kids without a home. Noah struggling to get out of the cart, despite his best efforts, me struggling to keep him from shrieking like a cat in distress, lady still digging, finally finds it. Niko and Genevieve fighting again. This time Niko pulls her hair and Genevieve shrieks and pushes him down. Sweet. Grab both by their arms, make them hold onto the cart. Crazy Lady who must be enjoying this, finds it, I am now 75 years old and my hair is falling out from the stress. Lady who I now know must be the Goddess of War, removes the security tag and asks to see my receipt , I restrain myself from slapping her in the face and hand it over. All good, all is go, out the door, with a grim look on my face. Another lady outside begging for donations to children without homes, takes one look at me and says God Bless you! Laugh ironically, throw my kids into the car, drive home in silence. Niko says, "Mom, I think I am going to take a nap today."
I replie, "We are all taking naps today! Or else!"

Simple Directions To My Meals
  • I buy the Costco chicken because it is the best price for the most meat. And it's the yummiest. Of course. I also buy the asiago cheese bagels there and the two combined makes for a delicious sandwich. I put a little bit of freshly ground sea salt on the sliced chicken, some dijon, green leaf lettuce and there you have it. Oh, don't for get to toast the bagels, if you like!
  • Yosida's Chicken is self explanatory. Marinate chicken over night in Yoshida's, grill, and sprinkle sesame seeds before serving. I have found that if you pound the chicken thinner before marinating it grills faster and holds the juice better. If you have never grilled fresh Pineapple, do it! We had this at this Brazilian Steak House in SAlt City. You just 'peel' the pineapple and grill all sides. Yummy. Of course. Everything I make is yummy. I soooo use instant brown rice. But hey.
  • Spaghetti. Prego Roasted GArlic and Parmesan spaghetti sauce. Add to browned and seasoned meat. (garlic salt, season salt, italian seasoning) Boil noodles. And there you have it. Fresh express caesar salad kit. Garlic toast, simple and easy. My mother in law actually introduced this style to me. I use this sliced sourdough bread I found in the bread aisles. Spread melted butter (I use smart balance) seasoned with garlic salt, (yes, more garlic and salt. You will notice that these two things are my best friends as well) Sprinkle with fresh parmesan cheese, and broil until desired doneness. (Noah is pulling all of my freshly folded laundry of the couch as I type. Thats just rich.)
  • Halibut recipe to come. It has a honey ginger glaze, I am pretty sure it is going to ROCK! Have to try it first. Roasted baby reds; quarter toss in olive oil, garlic salt, of course, and rosemary. Bake at 425 until desired doneness. I do my green salad with romaine, thinly sliced sweet onion, avocado, seasoned salad almonds, marinated artichoke hearts and good season's Italian dressing.
  • Lime Garlic Chicken and Bean salad recipe posted tomorrow. I pulled both these recipes at different times and saw their potential as a pair. Of course I was right to assume so and it makes a really refreshing summer meal. (Niko just dumped half a bottle of sunscreen in our kiddie pool. After I just refilled it with sparkling clean water. I wonder if it will protect them form the sun.....)
  • Vegan Tacos; Morning Star Veggie crumbles with taco seas. Serve with fresh salsa (recipe at right) and whatever other toppings you like. The fresh salsa really does the trick, I think.
  • The sausages I get from Safeway. They are sun dried tomato parmesan. Fry em up, mash your potatoes and sauté or steam your asparagus. A yummy way to sauté asparagus is chopped up, in olive oil and a little bit of Montreal steak seas. believe it or not. That stuff is the best.
  • MArinate Tri Tip in teriyaki sauce over night, grill. Grill corn as well
  • Pork Tenderloin I buy is pre-marinated, they usually have three flavors. It's small roll and it varies anywhere form $7.99-9.99. Oven Fried Potato recipe is a rally good one, I made up, will be posted tomorrow with the other recipes. Spinach Salad; Spinach Girad's Rasp. Vin., dried cherries and frosted almonds. Super Yum. It's a good thing I only do this twice a week. I think my children are changeling children today. I wonder when my real children will be returned. You know the perfect ones.
  • I am racing against the clock here, I have to go start my dinner.....
  • Ooooooooh! This Salmon recipe is the bomb! Fillet of Salmon, fresh is best. Costco actually has some pretty good wild salmon right now. Recipe tomorrow...do I have to keep saying that? Or have you all realized that you aren't getting any recipes out of me today? I actually buy the steamer bags in the fresh produce section of the broccoli and baby carrots. I steam them and then add some smart balance, lemon juice, garlic salt and dill. Wow. So good. Kids like em too, extra points! Wild Rice....a roni.
  • Avocado sandwiches. Good however you like them. I toast whole wheat bread, mayo and dijon, sliced avocado sprinkled with season salt, sprouts, sweet onions and green leaf lettuce. I am not a HUGE tomato fan, so I usually skip on that, but they are good just the same. Herbed pasta, simple. Boil desired noodles, olive oil, freshly ground salt and pepper a little bit of smart balance for flavor and Italian seas. I realize their are no measurements on the 'recipes' I am listing. This is because they are my own creations and I do everything to taste. I have made these things so often it just come naturally. I wing it a lot, I get that from my mom. Sometimes it's awesome, sometimes it's alright, other times Matt just looks at me like, "what were you thinking?"
  • I just discovered an awesome frozen burger patties that beats all others. I use them mostly, but I do have a GREAT burger recipe I will share with you once I get the go ahead from Grandma Barb. Old family recipe gotta make sure I won't have any of those Kentucky hill cousins pounding on my door with their rifles for spreading the family secret. Oh, got lost in imagining them with their missing teethe and smell of moonshine on their breath...the frozen patties are Harris Ranch. It's grass fed beef, I think that may be why they are so delicious. A little spendy. I think I spent $12 on nine patties. But that is two meals for us...for now.
  • No I DO NOT make homemade alfredo. I always say I am going to, then start reading the directions and ingredients and fizzle out. So I just either buy a white shell pasta mix, or buy pre-made sauce, like in the jar, and boil the noodles. I slice the chicken and cook it in a pan on the stove. With olive oil, and other fav. seasonings. So good, so easy, so happy.
MADE IT!!!!! Kids seem relatively happy swimming in their sunscreen filmy pool. Noah is of course inside with a pink pacifier in his mouth pushing Genevieve's pink baby stroller. Matt would die. Time to go brave my own kitchen.

Not quite yet!

Okay, so sorry you all! The menu posted starts on the 25th because that is our pay day. I usually make something very simple on the day of shopping as I usually go in the late evening, when Matt is home. I also don't plan a menu for Sunday, because this is my 'day off' of cooking. Anything I make is usually simple and unplanned. We sometimes go out on Sundays as well, or do Pizza. So this is why Sunday's will be blank.
A note on fasting. You may see fish on Wednesday's and Friday's and I apologize if that day is not a fish day. I try to do the best that I can. I can't usually get my kids to eat a variety of fasting foods, but they love fish. As long as it's wild, (no joke) and it is dipped in ranch! I swear, if there is a food my kids don't like I try giving them one of three dips, and Viola! They eat!
A note about my lack of Gourmet. I do sometimes cook some more involved meals, ones that are tried and true and worth the effort. But for the most part I cook very simply. Meals that take no longer than 30 minutes or 10 or less ingredients are my best friends. If you have small children you will understand this. Or if you just don't like to spend all day in the kitchen. My meals may not always be diet friendly either, or 100% organic, but I do try, and mostly I just try to make things that are kid friendly, or foods that MY kids will like. I have some picky eaters as well as children that eat very little. So this is the way I do it.
Grilling is my cooking of choice in the summer. It is a must do here in Cali. Once it hits 100 degrees here it usually sticks for a the rest of the summer.

A note about the previous post

I wrote this post, saved it, left it, and then came, back to finish it and couldn't figure out how to. So I accidently posted it. It's probably for the best as it was pretty lenghtly. BUt I started out to give a menu and when on and on about the reason for one and efficiant grocery shopping. Geez. Now all of my kids are up from their naps and time has run out. So tomorrow I will try and do the menu. I hope I have at least inspired you who need something like this.

Menus

The purpose of beginning this blog was to show you ladies who may be interested how to effectively make a menu, shop from it, and save money! This truly works, if you can be vigilant about it. I started doing this when I first got married and have stuck to it ever since. When we moved to California it became especially important, as the cost of living here is so much greater than where we had come from. The economy hasn't helped either. Sticking to this routine has really helped.
My system is to make a menu for two weeks at a time. This works for me, having three small children I try to avoid the grocery store as much as possible. "Wow, you have your hands full" is getting more and more annoying. Doesn't it look like I know that? While sweat rolls down my brow, chocolate chip is smeared all over my jean, resembling something way more disgusting than chocolate chip cookie Noah is trying to climb out the cart, Nikolas keeps pulling the sale price stickers off all the shelves, and Genevieve is running wild down all the aisles. I think by now I have realized my hands are full. So I only grocery shop twice a month. Each pay day. Granted there are short runs in between, for milk or bread or other random items I run out of. Shopping twice a month saves money on it's own. When you are really keeping track of how much you are spending and sticking to a strict budget, shopping in one big clump is the way to go. Rather than going to the store every few days to get this or that. I have noticed that when I do this, I end up spending quite a bit more.
A quick word about grocery shopping and list making before I go onto the menu. Like I said, I am the least organized person in the world, but when it come to the grocery store, I am strategic. This comes from shopping with no-listers one too many times. There is nothing more annoying or boring than strolling through the grocery store aisles trying to figure out what to buy. I would much rather do my food shopping and stroll through aisles of beautiful shoes! So I draft a list off my menu add other staples necessary to the household, and then I make the final list. What another list? Yes, I get a little list crazy when it comes to grocery shopping, but I am telling you even this saves money! As I rewrite my list, dividing things into categories (i.e...produce, meats and cheeses, canned goods...) It gives me an idea of how much I am getting and it gives me a chance to omit things that don't seem necessary the second time around. I also organize my list according to my store. Which sections come first. So that when I go into the store, I can start at one end and finish at the other. This also enables my trip to be quick and efficient. And so that Matt only calls me once instead of four times telling me that the kids are destroying the house and that they must have rabies because their behavior doesn't normal.
Since going strictly cash on our household budget, i also add everything up as I go. I know, now you are thinking wow, this girl is seriously OCD. Woah, maybe I am when it come to my grocery thing. But then again having a little regiment in my crazy life maybe keeps me sane. It is the one thing that always stays the same. So yes, a little OCD is allowed I think. By adding things up as I go, I mean writing the price of each item on my neatly organized list, and then adding the categories as i go. This was an absolute necessity when i went for the first time with only a certain amount of cash. Having no way of paying anything extra than what I had. This is a really good way to keep your self from spending to much.
GO CASH!!! When Matt and I decided to make a strict budget, we sat down together and wrote down everything we spent money on. I nailed it down to a tee. I knew how much I traditionally spent at the grocery store, and then I made lists of other items I bought. Diapers, shampoo, laundry soap, all that. I was even able to figure about how much each thing cost. Shopping for these things so often will do that to you. After all the lists were made, and the amounts were decided for each group, we got envelopes and assigned them their categories. Add cash, and you have got the envelope system. Thank you Dave Ramsy. It only works, if you remove all other forms of money from your wallet. Credit cards, debit cards, check books. This way you don't have the temptation to spend more. Sometimes i go to the store and catch a really good sale and have money left over. I did budget myself for miscellaneous things. Like stopping for a drink at sonics, or getting lunch on the way home form the park.

A Toast to Fine Receipes

First recipe has been posted. Hurray! My kids only caused minimal damage to the house and I only burned one burger. Well, actually, I just got up to flip the remainder of the burgers and discovered sweet little blue and pink drawings all over the table. How nice.
A friend opted for this recipe so I decided to do it first. Tomorrow when I have endless time on my hands, and avoiding all house hold duties I will post my menu for the week along with a few good recipes from it. And so it goes.....

The Beginning

I am so out of my element here with this blog page. I hate typing. I can't even use the 'home row'. Matt makes fun of me for it. He says I look like a wounded bird when I type. I did try in high school to use the home row, but I guess the wounded bird technique was just easier. So I try to type in secret now.
I told every one that this would be a blog about my unique and amazing, some what terrifying ability to make a menu, shop from it, cook delicious meals, and by doing all of that save money. I am probably one of the most unorganized people in the world. I work better in chaos. However in this aspect of my life I manage to be focused. even with my two eldest children brawling in the back ground and my one year old playing in the pee in the toilet. Speaking of the latter, he is screaming bloody murder in his bed because I am avoiding him while writing this insanely interesting beginner blog. Alright, he's out, and happily munching on Life cereal.
I am sure through out this entire adventure of blogging, my grammar will be atrocious, my spelling annoying, and my general lack of the ability to write nauseating, but hopefully we can all get past that by the humor I will try and install about my monotonous life as a wife and mother.
Well, here we go. I am going to 'publish post'. Oooooh. I have goose bumps right now.
